Guiding Lights: The Historic Poompuhar Lighthouse
Standing tall on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in ancient Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam), the Poompuhar Lighthouse is both a navigational beacon and a symbol of Tamizh heritage. From its vantage you can admire the sun rising over the ruins of an early Chola port, and feel the pulse of Tamil Nadu’s maritime past.
A Beacon through the Ages
The modern lighthouse was commissioned in 1979, but Poompuhar’s shores were guiding mariners for over two millennia. Once the thriving mouth of the sacred Kaveri River, it was celebrated in Sangam literature as a hub of trade with Rome and Sri Lanka. Today’s tower blends functional engineering with echoes of ancient brick-built wharves.
Must-See at Poompuhar
Climb the 50-meter spiral staircase for panoramic sea views and spot fishing boats below at dawn. Explore the nearby Marine Archaeology Museum to see anchors, pottery shards, and sculptures dredged from the seabed. Wander the reconstructed city murals at the Silappadikaram Memorial, commemorating Tamil epic lore.
