Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

Experience the Avian Spectacle at Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

Nestled just 75 km from Chennai, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is one of India’s oldest protected wetlands. Every winter, tens of thousands of migratory waterbirds flock here, transforming the shallow tanks into a vibrant tapestry of wings and song.

Overview & Best Time to Visit

Spanning ~30 ha around four large irrigation tanks, Vedanthangal draws herons, pelicans, storks and pintails from as far as Siberia and Australia between November and March. Early mornings through late afternoons offer prime birdwatching conditions under mild winter skies.

Birds & Biodiversity

Look out for Painted Storks, Spot-billed Pelicans, Openbill Storks, and egrets perched along the water’s edge. Smaller warblers and kingfishers flit among the bunds, while marsh terns and sandpipers skim the tank surfaces in graceful arcs.

Conservation & Heritage

Established as a sanctuary in 1936, Vedanthangal’s name means “place of one lakh birds.” Local villagers originally protected nesting sites, and today the Tamil Nadu Forest Department manages viewing hides and regulated pathways to minimize disturbance.
